Donnie Nickey was fined $2,500 on Wednesday for accidentally hitting referee Bill Leavy in Sunday's 33-25 loss to the San Diego Chargers.
Nickey, the Titans special teams captain, was ejected from the game as he attempted to punch San Diego's Scott Mruczkowski on a kickoff, and he instead grazed Leavy.
“He [Mruczkowski] tackled me, body slammed me, pushed my head into the ground, just went over the line,” Nickey said. “So I was gonna hit him. I didn't see the ref. I watched the film. He was all the way in the back of the end zone. He didn't blow his whistle and I swung at him. I stood up real quick. He [Mruczkowski] didn't stand up, so I swung over his head and touched the ref.”
Nickey said the fact that NFL discipline czar Ray Anderson was in attendance at the Titans-Chargers game might have helped to lessen the fine.
“I think maybe he saw exactly what happened and kind of took that into account,” Nickey said.
