Bironas likely out vs. Redskins

It sounds as if Rob Bironas is going to get Thursday's preseason opener off in order to rest his sore back.

Asked on Monday how his back was, Bironas responded, “It's coming along.”
But apparently it isn't “coming along” quickly enough for Coach Mike Munchak to put him in Thursday against the Washington Redskins.

“I think with the back you’re limited a little bit as far as all you can do. I've have back problems, you don’t want to irritate it,” Munchak said. “It’s almost like you’re letting it rest. They tell you with a back to swim and walk as much as possible.
So, I think it’s those things where you’re kind of letting it settle down so it doesn’t become more of a problem.”

Bironas' likely absence on Thursday means an opportunity for Brazilian Maikon Bonani, an undrafted free agent from South Florida, who has displayed a strong leg in camp thus far.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for him (Bonani). He’s been kicking well out here. He’s another perfect example,” Munchak said. “You want to see someone kick maybe before halftime for a big kick or at the end of the game for a big kick. See how he kicks off in a real game. I would assume that there’s a good chance he will be the kicker Thursday. I think we probably would rest Rob at this point. He has been sore; his back’s been a bit irritated. Chances are he’ll sit this week and then be ready next week.”

*As for other players, Karl Klug was back practicing after getting a day off Monday. Receiver Nate Washington and tackle David Stewart both got Tuesday off to rest after soreness.

*Linebackers Colin McCarthy and Zaviar Gooden remain out, as does center Brian Schwenkie, who could return next week and play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 17.

*With two linebackers temporarily on the shelf, the Titans signed linebacker Kadarron Anderson on Tuesday and waived/injured cornerback Matthew Pierce, who has been battling an ankle injury.
