Titans, Babineaux close to deal

The Tennessee Titans safety situation that looked to be potentially in limbo at the start of free agency now looks fairly solidified.

On Monday, the Titans franchised free safety Michael Griffin, and now Tennessee is close to agreeing to a new contract extension to retain Jordan Babineaux, according to a source.

Babineaux cannot officially re-sign with the Titans until free agency begins March 13, but his agent J.R. Rickert and the club have been negotiating for several weeks in an effort to bring him back into the fold.

Babineaux came over as a free agent from the Seattle Seahawks and signed a one-year veteran minimum deal with Tennessee last year shortly after the lockout ended. Because of that, the Titans cannot officially re-sign Babineaux until the free agent period opens.

Babineaux was a solid pickup for the Titans, leading the team in tackles with 117 and had one interception, which he returned 99 yards for a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns
