The Tennessee Titans will be making an extra road trip during training camp, heading to Dalton, Ga., to scrimmage with the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 6.
The Titans and Falcons will each travel about the same distance and will scrimmage at a local high school field. The Titans and Falcons scrimmaged in the 1997 preseason in Chattanooga and in 2004 when the Falcons visited Baptist Sports Park.
“We practiced against them years ago. We scrimmaged them and we thought that was a good idea.,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said. “I think going against other teams in general is a good idea for your team, especially when you‘ve got a young team like we do. We talked about it last year a little bit, but just because of the lockout, it was too hard to something like this.”
Munchak said it will be a good chance for the team to bond on the trip and to get in some good work against a relatively unfamiliar opponent to break the monotony of going against teammates in camp.
“You can take time out and travel and have a good practice against a good football team and really work your first and second groups quite a bit without worrying about injuries like you would in a preseason game,” Munchak said. “I think it’s a great opportunity to get on the bus and have a bonding opportunity and going to practice together and getting a lot of reps against people you’re not as familiar with. I think that’s a good thing.
“We’ve both got to travel about the same amount of distance to get where we’re at. We’re still ironing out all of that, but that whole experience for your team kind of breaks up camp for a day, and in the long run I feel it will be very good for everybody.”
