Wednesday injuries: No VY or Collins

It was no surprise that Vince Young was standing on the side watching Wednesday's walk-through.

What was a surprise was that Kerry Collins was standing beside him.

Young was still walking somewhat gingerly on his injured left knee (protected by a sleeve) and ankle sustained in Monday night's 30-3 win at Jacksonville.

But Collins sat out as well, because of an injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand, which was sporting a wrap.

“I did it in the game the other night. I hit it on a hand or a helmet,” Collins said. “I can't tell you how many times you jam your finger when you hit it on somebody's helmet. I remember one year in Oakland, it happened the first game of the season and I fought it the whole season.”

Collins indicated that the injury is not serious and that he would practice on Thursday when the Titans have a fuller session.

“It's just from the regular stuff that goes on in a game. I kept playing after it happened the other night,” said Collins, who suffered the injury midway through the third quarter. “I just got another day of rest today and I'll be going at it tomorrow. I'll be fine.”

That left rookie Rusty Smith handling the reps during the walk-through for the day.

Other players on the injury report who did not practice included defensive tackle Tony Brown (knee), tight end Bo Scaife (groin) and Jason Jones (shoulder).

Running back Chris Johnson (thigh) had limited participation, while Justin Gage (hamstring) and Jason McCourty (forearm) practiced fully.

As for Young, Fisher said he was better on Wednesday and would remain day-to-day in his progress for now.

“He's better. He would not have practiced today, had we had a full practice. He's day-to-day,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said of Young.

Fisher went on to say that the key to Young returning is his mobility. That is probably an even bigger issue this week with the Eagles, who like to blitz a lot, on the schedule.

"He has to heal up to where he can move around in the pocket," Fisher said of Young.

Young is scheduled to speak to the media on Thursday.

Smith said he is ready regarding the possibility of being one play from seeing meaningful snaps on Sunday against the Eagles, if Young can't play and Collins is injured.

"I obviously don't know it nearly as well as Kerry Collins or Vince Young, but I think I know it well enough that if my number were to be called, I would be able help the offense," Smith said.
