Babin: Titans to pass on extension

Defensive end wants to stay in Tennessee, but says club will allow him to head to free agency instead.

TitanInsider: Any closer and you'd be in the huddle.

  • Defensive end might be the way to go at #8 in the draft.

Possibly, but this draft is rich at DT. Don't forget Morgan is coming back. I guess this means that perhaps they will sign Ford and/or Ball on the cheap as well.

  • This is disappointing, although not surprising. If they didn't even talk money did they think last year was a fluke?

How is Morgan doing with his rehab?

He believes he will be ready by training camp. That sounds a bit optimistic to me, but he should be a go by the season opener (whenever that is thanks to the lockout).

  • Seems to me that a 30 year old de that never meet expectations until they came here needs the titans more then they need him. The titans will be fine without babin there's still quality de's on this team.

Morgan, yes. But I wouldn't call William Hayes or Jacob Ford quality, more like serviceable backups.

According to the paper, his agent said the Titans wanted to talk after the CBA is done and he understood that. Sounds like their camp has different ideas on what"s happening. I hope they do resign him for resonable money. That would be one less position we would have to fill.

  • The story in the paper is just them reacting after the fact to Babin's quotes. His agent is just trying to save face because he knows the Titans still may be an option. But Babin is not happy with how things have gone down. Let's put it this way. Babin acts as though he isn't asking for unreasonable money. The Titans just re-signed Brett Kern to an extension, so if the Titans really wanted to get something done before the lockout, they could.

What they're saying is really semantics, because if they don't sign him by Friday, which they won't, then he will automatically become a free agent. The only other way that won't happen is if a lockout occurs and then when a deal is done, they have a grace period before free agency begins.

I agree they could sign him if they want but nobody really knows what the cap will be like when and if something is done. I think that is 1 reason we aren't seeing a lot of teams but the Raiders (and they don't really count) signing many of their FA. They should at least talk to him and explain the situation so there isn't bad feelings when they can get together. This is the way things have been done here for years so it tells me it wasn't Fish that was doing this. Who is it in your opinion that handles the communication so badly?

I think it's an organizational wide thing. Fisher was somewhat to blame on things, and so was Reinfeldt. Reese operated that way too at times. I'm not sure who told Babin that if he had a good year he would get a contract extension, whether it was Fisher or Reinfeldt, but whoever it was, Jason took them at their word and now he's upset that it didn't happen. Or at least hasn't happened yet. I wouldn't be surprised if he wound up signing somewhere else on principle, unless the Titans come in with an offer quickly once a labor deal is done.

  • With the teams transition the de will be playing in the 7 over the tackle something babin struggled with in philly. He needs to play spread out in the 9 or he just gets swallowed up. Hayes will play opposite of morgan unless we get a gem in the draft. Like I said before the titans will be alright without babin (who I like but we shouldn't get carried away with) I think hayes will be more at home in the 7 using his power on tackles rather then working angles with speed. Also this transition will help us against the run and screen passes.

  • Jevon Kearse was great at that slant 9 technique when he was first a Titan. He went to Philly and didn't fit playing over the tackle. Even though the Tennessean story tried to downplay Babin saying he was going into free agency, it now appears that Babin doesn't exactly fit what Jerry Gray wants to do, so Babin's assessment of the situation appears to be correct.
