Cortland Finnegan injury

  • Cortland Finnegan’s injury has been shrouded in mystery. First, the Titans were a bit reluctant to reveal what the injury was, calling it “soreness,” before Jeff Fisher said it was a hip flexor problem.
    Other speculation centered around a quadriceps or hamstring issue, before it was finally revealed to be a groin injury.
    Finnegan returned for individual drills on Monday after being out for several days, but since that time has not practiced. In fact, he has been MIA on the practice field, not even watching practice the past couple of days or appearing in the locker room during open availability.
    Finnegan has sometimes been his own worst critic, and has been frustrated whenever he has been forced to deal with injuries over the years. (FYI, that competitiveness and self-criticism is part of what makes him so successful!)
    If there is a silver lining, it has given Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner much needed reps this week in camp. Look for those two to start Monday night as Finnegan sits out again.

  • Is there any concern that Finnegan may miss the season opener? If not, why has the team been so secretive and why has he been absent from practices?

  • I'm a little disappointed that Mouton hasn't stepped up. This is his opportunity, and he will definitely regret it if he doesn't make the most of it. On the other hand, McCourty looked good against the Seahawks. I'm curious to see if he can carry it over to the Cardinals game.

  • Mouton did better than he gets credit for in the Seahawks game. He gave up a TD on what I believe was a Cover 0 blitz (no safety). It was a mistake for sure, but it cost him a lot more than what would typically occur with Hope or Griffin protecting him.

    That's not to say he did better than McCourty that night, but he made some good plays that night too.

    Chuck Cecil said as much on The Zone a little while ago. That said, I still think Verner is the long-term solution at corner. And, no, I don't think Finnegan's injury is serious. The Titans have gotten a lot more secretive about injuries in general over the past few years. Also, I think Cortland is one of those guys that doesn't like to say much if he's not able to pull his weight. And the injury keeps him from pulling his weight right now.

    BTW, Cyrus, it would be great if you can help spread the word about the board to other Titans fans.

  • I caught up with Cortland after practice. He won't play Monday night against Arizona, but from the sound of it would surely love to be able to take part in the joint practice with the Cardinals next Wednesday.
    I think there's a chance he will play at Carolina next Saturday, barring any setbacks.
    Here is what he said:

    TI: You did a little bit of running out there today. Are you getting closer to returning?
    Finnegan: My groin is slowly but surely healing itself.

    TI: How frustrating is this injury for you, not being able to practice?
    Finnegan: It's like taking a kid's candy away from him. It's one of the most frustrating things, because you want to get better as an individual. You want to relate to your teammates. You feel disconnected. It's a lot of bad stuff, man. Being injured, by any stretch of the imagination is not a good thing.

    TI: Jeff Fisher has pretty much ruled you out for the Monday night game. Do you think you have a chance to get back for the joint practice next week?
    Finnegan: I always plan and hope to be. We'll just see how time progresses, and we'll just go one day at a time.

    TI: What about playing against the Panthers?
    Finnegan: We'll diagnose it and see how it's doing.

    You don't want it to linger. When your groin is injured, it tends to linger if you don't take it nice and slow.

  • I don't know if I am just buying into the hype, and certanily Finny is far and above our best corner, but I'm not as scared of a Verner McCourty starting duo. In fact, it will be good to see it roll for a bit. One never knows what will happen to Finny during the season.

  • Doesn't really sound to me like he's going to be back anytime soon. With such a quick turnaround this week If he misses any practice this week he'll probably miss the carolina game as well. I think the Saints game is going to be the best bet for his return. But still wouldn't be surprised if he just waited till week 1!
