Fisher's successor

  • In the event Fisher is let go, I think the next head coach, as many have said, will have Bud Adams or Mike Reinfeldt connections. People have mentioned Gregg Williams, Mike Munchak as likely candidates. I've also heard that the Titans will look for somebody with HC experience, which would include GW, and someone like Jon Gruden. But nobody has ever mentioned Mike Sherman. He has a lot of experience and lead his team to four straight playoff births from 2001-2004. He has Reinfeldt Green Bay/Seattle connections, as he was also Seattle's offensive coordinator in 99. Just another name to throw out there that everyone has forgotten about.

  • From what I've been told, if Bud is paying Fisher $7 mil not to coach his team next year, then whoever he pays to coach them will probably make a lot less than that. I think that would probably rule out the Gruden and Cowher types. Williams and Munchak are certainly viable options IMO.

TitanInsider: Any closer and you'd be in the huddle.

  • Terry, have you heard any other names other than Munch, Gregg Williams...

    owenstg

  • Not really. Fisher is still in power right now. There's always the chance he could finish strong and be back. He is, after all, still under contract, but the VY issue is still hanging over this organization.

  • Wonder how much it would take to get someone like Jim Harbaugh? I do believe his parents still live in the Bowling Green area.

I think Harbaugh would be a solid NFL coach - especially if he can bring Andrew Luck with him!

Definitely a good idea, I would love to see Harbaugh coach either the Titans or the Wolverines.

  • If it was Mike Munchak, I know one guy FOR SURE that would be on his staff......BRUCE MATTHEWS.

  • Was thinking that myself Darren. New oline coach = Bruce Matthews. Would be pretty cool to have an oilers HOF as head coach and an oilers all pro as General Manager (in MR).

Not to mention HOFer Bruce matthews as oline coach, chuck cecil (former oiler) as DC, marcus robertson, rayna stewart, all former titans/oilers.

  • Also, If Munchak or GW were named HC we'd get to keep a lot of our assistants. If Fish leaves and an outsider takes over, Fisher will take all the good assistants with him. I'm hoping for Munchak in the event Fish is gone. Would rather stick with Fish though. If Norv Turner were to get fired, he might be interesting in coaching with fish. Cause Dinger probably won't be back next season regardless, with his illness.

Very sad but probably true on the Dinger part. Thought it was interesting that on the Mike Francesa show in New York on Friday, he had Jay Glazer (Fox Sports) on and they carried out a conversation basically acting like it was a foregone conclusion that Fisher was outta here at the end of the season. They started talking about future landing spots for JF. It just goes to show you how this year is different than any other since JF has been head coach. The fans are louder, local media feels different and NOW the national media is taking a different stance. It may have ALL started in that locker room!

  • All of the names your guys are throwing out are older established names. I'd like to see Bud bring in some youth and energy to this team. Go out of the box and get a good young coach that can relate to some of these players.

The Steelers did it with Tomlin and the bucs did it with Morris. There are plenty of young cordinators that would be a great fit with the Titans you just have to take a chance. I think Harbaugh would be an awesome hire but I don't think it happens. I think he really want the 49ers job.

  • Throwing out names is great and a lot of fun but if Bud gets rid of Fisher and keeps VY what kind of good coach will come into a situation where he has no control over an immature qb who has the owner's ear?

    bjacoway

  • Hearing some rumors about the Titans being high on Sean McDermott as a potential replacement for the Fish.....If he even gets the axe of course, which I'd say is about 50-50 at this point.

    owenstg

  • Just throwing out some names I think there would be a number of young guys looking to take over an NFL whether VY is here or not.

Her are some that might be a good fit.

    Brian Schottenheimer / Jets
    Mike Mularkey / Falcons
    Ron Rivera / Chargers
    Dom Capers / Packers
    Rod Marinelli / Chicago Bears

Those would be some good names to look at. What Schottenheimer is doing with Sanchez is great and Rivera could be a great head coach.

I know this: Rivera would be a great head coach at least twice a year, because he absolutely owns Peyton Manning. Look at the Chargers record against Indy over the last few years. They even beat Manning in the playoffs a couple of years ago when San Diego limped in at 8-8.

Capers and Marinelli are definitely not young. Nor were they impressive in their initial head coaching jobs. Mularky might be interesting, I'll give him a pass on his stint with the Bills (Marv Levy must be a genius, because I can't see how anyone wins there). But I have thought about Brian Schottenheimer myself, he intrigues me. He may not be a great personality match for this city, but who cares, he would certainly inject some energy into this tired offense.

  • I'd give Rod Marinelli a pass with the detroit lions because he was there when Millen was the GM which could have been one of the worst gm's ever. and he did have the 3rd place nfc finish in 2007 before the 0-16 year after. I think he just didn't have the leadership at the top to let him succeed.

Even schwartz is having trouble winning with that team and I think everyone thought highly of him as a cordinator.

You NAILED it!! If VY stays, then what coach will want to come in and inherit somebody else's mess? Has anybody watched the Washington Redskins soap opera this year? How about Josh McDaniels and Jay Cutler? Most coaches want who they are comfortable with. That's why if VY wins this 'made-for-tv' saga, someone within would probably win out, like a Munchack. Plus, he deserves it! He's an awesome guy and a helluva good coach! thumbsup

I would say Schwartz definately has the Lions moving in the right direction though. They have been extremely competitive this year. Look at their losses this season; Games they could have won. There is such a thing about how you lose football games. Buffalo and Detroit records this season don't reflect it but they are in most all ballgames with a chance to win. Meanwhile, Carolina and Denver have acted more like the bottom feeders they really are.
