How soon do you want Locker to play?

  • I don't think he should start the season opener, but if the Titans start slowly, then I think he needs to be on the job learning and playing by starting the final 8-10 games in 2011.

TitanInsider: Any closer and you'd be in the huddle.

I'm of two minds here. On the one hand I can see bringing him along slowly, especially with a shortened offseason.

On the other hand, Sanchez and Flacco started from Day 1, and I don't think much of them at all, even though they've had success from the get-go. With a full offseason and a playbook tailored to Locker's skill set (a la Sanchez and Flacco) I could see Locker starting from Day 1. But since there isn't a full offseason I guess I'm on board with your take, Terry.

Day One. Baptism by fire. On the job training. Throw him to the wolves. Whatever cliche you want.

People obviously have differing opinions on this, but I think if you have it, you have it. Better to find out early than late. Peyton Manning - worked for him. Matt Ryan - looking good. Sanchez - check. Flacco - yup.

Aaron Rogers got to wait and did great. Leinart - nope. Cutler - have to say yeah.

Let him learn and see what you have. Line is very good, running game is very good so it's not like he's gotta sling it 40 times a game.

That's why I wrote that I'm of two minds. I'd be extremely disappointed if Locker starts from Day One and isn't AT LEAST as good as Sanchez and Flacco. If he does start from Day One, however, I sincerely hope that the playcalling will reflect heavily on Locker's strengths--rollouts, hot reads, play-action, etc..

I definitely agree with you here. Whenever he first starts to play, he has to be set up for success, and that means the Titans may have to play a version of (gasp, cough) Fisherball early on to emphasize running the ball and not turning over until Locker can fully be turned loose.

  • I say the first Houston game which is after the bye week.

If it's sensible Fisherball then that's fine. But last season we couldn't even execute a screen pass! I think the staff could do far worse than basically copy elements from the offenses of Baltimore and the Jets and sprinkle in a few things Locker feels comfortable executing early on. Cook is a key figure for me, perhaps Williams. Every young QB needs that security blanket, like Mac9 (RIP) and Wycheck. Or like Sanchez and Keller.

Not to kamikaze this thread into a VY debate, but he was a major reason why the Titans couldn't run a screen. It still confounds me that the guy could drop a 50-yard spiral right on the money and would lay a 5-yard screen at a guy's ankles. Plus, Dinger for some reason didn't like or couldn't teach the screen as a big part of the playbook.

Being that there seems to be a more mature tone to this board--and the fact that DMeade- has a shiny new bauble with which to play--it probably won't degenerate into one of those interminable VY debates. I agree, though, VY's short and intermediate passing game was terrible. Did you read PFF's article about deep passing? VY came out on top! Didn't hurt that he had one of the lowest sample sizes.

Sanchez and Flacco were among the worst, reinforcing my notion that the staff need to overhaul the offensive playbook if Locker's gonna be effective early. Young and Collins finished 1 and 3 in "Deep Throw Percentage of Attempts". Dinger really liked the vertical game. I like what Munch has said about ball control but hope he and his staff breathe fresh life into that notion.

  • After the bye week makes a lot of sense.

    PapaTitan

  • Sit him for two games then start him.

    Go Blue and Go Titans!

    CorchBlue

  • If he's ready to go start him week 1 if not wait till he's ready. I want to see him as a fan but I want what's best for the team long and shart term.

    sgtfoley

  • I say start him for the last half of the season, unless we are playing lights out behind whoever the starting QB might be. I think Locker is the 2nd most NFL ready QB in this class, but I'd still rather play it safe. Given the short offseason, he'll probably need at least a few games to learn the playbook and observe a vet QB.

I'm flattered that you tend to somehow reference me in half the threads you post in. Anyway, I am beginning to say let's just start Collins until the Bye week (probably about the time he would be running out of gas anyway) and then hand over the keys to Locker to start after the bye week.

    DMeade69647

  • Throw him in first game. He has a solid oline that will keep him safe. That makes a big difference.

Don't be flattered. I only referenced you because you're the ONLY one on this particular board that would do something like that in defense of your hero. The rest of the members seem all-too-aware of VY's limitations and faults.

    CharrdWood

  • You have referenced me on the tomb, this board, and on TC on threads that I hadn't even been in discussion on. Sorry I actually have my own opinions, unlike yourself. Give up your obsession with me please.

    DMeade69647

  • The question is who would you start instead? Collins isn't even signed. If it's between Collins or Locker, start Locker, please.

  • After the bye week.
