I would think B or D, probably B. However, if Locker is who we hear he is then yhis will only be temporary.

It's really process of elimination.
A) Jake Locker won't be ready
B) Kerry Collins probably won't want to stick around and learn a new system only to be moved to backup
C) Rusty Smith was terrible last year and probably isn't even ready to be a backup yet
D) Matt Hasselbeck wants to be a starter. He won't want to be a transition guy for half a season.
I think Alex Smith would be perfect, but it looks like Harbaugh wants to keep him in San Fran for a little while. David Carr is an interesting candidate b/c of his relationship with Palmer, but he might not be good enough.
I think we just need a guy who is looking for a chance to showcase his talents and won't be too proud to be a backup at this point in his career. I don't want a young guy like Rusty or an old guy at the twilight of his career like Kerry.
Matt Flynn would be terrific if he didn't cost us a high draft pick.

Jake won't be ready. Rusty is never going to be ready. Kerry won't be here, and Hasselbeck doesn't want to come somewhere he's going to play 8 games and give way to the franchise QB. He's not ready to embrace the backup role at the end of his career but he needs to change that mentality.

It could be B or D, but don't discount A. The only thing keeping Locker from being the starter right now is the lockout. If not for that, they would probably already be grooming him to be ready.

I think a lot of it depends on how much work they get. If Jake was to get a full training camp and 4 preseason games, it very well could be him. Otherwise it will be another vet.

anyone but Locker.. with the offseasons limited and who knows how many guys cut from the regular season, we need to nurse Locker as much as possible.. I would be ok with starting him his 2nd year though

I've got to go with locker anyone that goes out there this year is going to be put in a tough spot. There's no one better then locker out there that we will pick up and we may as well get locker some ojt.

I have to admit, I did get the feeling out at Father Ryan on Wednesday that the players think he's going to be their opening day starter. Good points on here though about how much normal work he's going to get because of the lockout. If he gets a normal training camp and full preseason......I would be willing to change my pick to A).

The more I talk to people and hear stuff from players and staff, I think Locker has a real shot to be the guy and the veteran they bring in will be more of a Josh McCown/David Carr/Todd Collins career backup type rather than a guy who could legitimately start for awhile like Hasselbeck.

I think a lot of it depends on when the season starts and how long of a season it is. Let's assume it's a 16 game season, I believe at some point Jake will start, but I doubt he's the guy on Day 1. If Kerry is retained, he will probably be the opening day starter. If another vet is brought in post lockout, I think it's safe to say the only advantage they will have on Jake is NFL experience, but they will also start fresh in the new offense. Looking at Jake's mentality and history and if it were up to me, I'd start him out of the gate.
