Return Game

  • Any chance Damian Williams handles punts and Marc Mariani kickoffs on opening day?

    Dan Cotton

  • I doubt Mariani will be dressing on opening day (he'll make the 53, but not the 45), so I'd put my money on Williams handling all of the return duties.

  • That will be a good thing to watch tonight.

  • I think Fisher and Lowry would prefer the same guy do both, if possible. That way you don't have to keep an extra receiver on the 45-man active roster on game day.

I think the bigger thing to watch is Lavelle Hawkins vs Damian Williams for the 4th wide receiver spot. If Hawkins wins the battle, Mariani may be handling kickoffs while Williams is left off the active 45. However if Williams wins it Mariani will probably be left off the 45. Or maybe Hawkins gets left off the active 45.

Good point. It didn't look like to me that Hawk really stepped up with the extra playing time last night. That said, Mariani right now looks more comfortable on returns than Williams IMO.

  • Marc also had some nice catch and runs. I really like this kid.

Marc Mariani took a step forward Saturday night in the return race. Had three kickoff returns for a total of 64 yards. He also added two catches for 59 yards to his arsenal.
Meanwhile, Damian Williams had the crucial fumble in the first half. He did have his shoulder pop out, on that play. Williams came back in but did not participate in anymore returns. He's not expected to miss any time.
When asked at the press conference Sunday about the return race, Fisher said "they both can do it." I think in the end, they want one guy to handle the return duties. With that being said, three pre-season games in the books and clearly Mariani is your leader in the clubhouse.

  • I'm not sure there is a clear leader right now, but the fumble definitely hurt Williams. I bet Fisher lets them split time returning in the first half against the Saints. That way they can make an apples to apples comparison. I'd also like to see Mariani as the slot receiver for a few plays in the first half. Yeah, he looks really good against the scrubs, but I'd like to see him against the top guys. That being said, I like both of them. Damian Williams reminds me of Brandon Jones, and Mariani looks like a young Brandon Stokley.

I'd like to see Mariani Returning Kickoffs in the first half. I'd also like to see if Mariani and Young could hook up for a couple of passes. We got one more preseason game to look at.

  • Damian Williams is the correct answer.
