Second procedure possible for Britt

If receiver needs a clean-up, it is not expected to be a major setback.

TitanInsider: Any closer and you'd be in the huddle.

  • I hate hearing this and hope it's not necessary.

  • I had forgotten about Morgan needing a scope. Really hope Kenny doesn't need the scope.

Terry, would you say the odds are better than 50-50 that Kenny has the second procedure?

  • Its probably best to clean up the scar tissue now to prevent pain and swelling down the road. There is plenty of time to heal as of now.

    Good point, Bigdogtitan.

  • Agreed. I rehab sports injuries for a living. Although this is not ideal, he'll have plenty of time to get ready for the season. The biggest thing is how much he is ready by early season. Sometimes it can take 2 yrs to really feel like your old knee again.

    D. Morgan fits this as well. This coming yr will mark 2 yrs after his surgery.

BlueRaider22, what percentage of the ACL patients you have dealt with needed a second operation or "clean up" before they were ready to return?

Of purely ACL reconstructions? <10% have a 2nd surgery. The likely problem with Kenny is that he had the MCL repair as well if I'm not mistaken. Scar tissue most often forms during periods of inactivity. Often we are allowed to progress "pure" ACL reconstructions fairly quickly minimizing the risk for scar tissue formation, whereas most Dr's will choose to immobilize the knee for a much longer period of time when the MCL is involved.....or risk re-tear of the MCL. A quick clean-up surgery (like the one Kenny is facing) is much, much easier to bounce back from than another surgery to repair the first repair. I don't know about percentages, but I would guess-timate about <25% have another surgery to clean up...maybe?

Rehab tip: If you have surgery do exactly as the Physical Therapist and Dr. say. There is a reason why they tell you to do things or not to do things. This is not me knocking Kenny, this is me on a soapbox.

Other things to consider: Sometimes what is reported isn't exactly the true injury. There may be more to this than meets the eye. My former background in Athletic Training has taught me that. For instance. It is very, very common to have and ACL tear alone. It is common to have an ACL and MCL tear together. More common than the ACL/MCL tear is what we call the "Unhappy Triad." (Also called the "Terrible Triad.") In this the ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus is torn. I have not heard mention of whether or not his meniscus was torn, but it doesn't mean it hasn't happened. The presence of the tear could possibly make the liklihood of a follow-up surgery higher.

  • Overall I don't think a 2nd surgery will really harm him much. What I am more concerned about is how well he ready by the season.....meaning at what capacity will he be able to go.

Take D. Morgan for example. Some people can get an ACL reconstruction and come back the next yr at 100%. For some that first yr back is about 75%. It looked to me like D. Morgan was not 100% last yr. I expect him to be better this yr. Same with Kenny. Will he be 75%? 90%? 100%? and at what points during the season? (I don't think the 2nd surgery will affect this much, but the 1st one certainly will)
