Seriously...Why the reluctance to pay CJ?

  • The Titans have paid players not nearly as valuable to the team as CJ a lot more money than CJ is getting paid and he makes pennies in comparison to comparable backs in the league. His holding out is talked about in the media as if it's a certainty, which means the Titans aren't making moves towards getting him signed? Are they waiting to get the draftees signed first?

    Confounding.

  • I agree and it will cost them more if they continue to wait. DeAngelo Williams just got 21 million guaranteed. You think CJ's agent won't be playing up the fact that the 5th or 6th best back in the league got this much?

  • CJ will get his dough.

But running backs are overrated. The whole running game in today's NFL is overrated. No sense in tying up vast sums of cash and cap space in a player who, for all his flash and dash, isn't that important and can be replaced by a committee.

Who are James Starks, Willie Parker, Pierre Thomas, Brandon Jacobs, Joseph Addai?

The last 5 running backs to win Superbowls.

If you want to win, you have to have a great QB, but you don't have to have a great RB.

So CJ isn't that important, eh? And he can be replaced by committee?

I beg to differ. If he is able to return to his 2009 form, there is not a better back in this decade.

I agree, however, Willie Parker, Jacobs and Addai all had great seasons when they won it all. Jussayin

Parker had 791 yds and 5 TDs.

Jacobs had 1009 yds and 5 TDs.

Addai had 1081 yds and 7 TDs.

Not bad, but there really hasn't been a Super bowl winner with a run-dominated offense since the '05 Steelers. You win through the air these days.

  • it wouldnt be THAT bad if CJ isn't resigned.

running backs are a dime a dozen.

the packers won the super bowl with a sixth round rookie.

cj is going to go downhill fast with the punishment and frame he has. i wouldn't rush to sign him to a long term deal.

    ONUV

  • lol Those teams also had Quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and solid defenses. Neither of which we have. We need CJ a lot more than you think.

  • if we didn't sign cj, how much money does that open up to sign defensive players?

I agree...I was just saying, that it's not like those guys had awful seasons or anything. Addai and Jacobs were part of a two headed attack as well.

I don't disagree that we need him.

But the evidence is that high level backs don't last (so if we sign him to some 5 year deal, odds are he's not the same player in year 4-5 as he is in year 1-2), and the other fact is that you don't need an elite back to be successful.

We do neet a solid defense, high level QB, and at least some quality wideouts (none of which we currently have), so that makes making CJ happy important for a year or two, but again - if you want to win a title, you don't need a CJ, you just need a couple of solid backs.

  • I don't think the Titans are being reluctant to sign CJ. They've only had a couple of days to talk to him since the lockout ended. Give them a couple of weeks and the deal will get done. This won't get done overnight, nor should it. Besides, who cares if CJ misses a couple weeks of camp? I think this is getting way overblown.
