Should VY get the 2005 Heisman?

  • I say no. In baseball, they haven't erased Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens' stats from the record book just because they cheated. If a college football or basketball team vacates a national championship, they don't go and hand the trophy to the team they beat to get it.

TitanInsider: Any closer and you'd be in the huddle.

  • No. But if they offered me one I would not turn it down. It would be fun to have around the house.

    I don't think he's getting the Heisman...

That being said the reason I agree with the Heisman being taken away from Bush is because what other way can you punish the kid who takes the money? They know its wrong to take gifts, its stressed throughout the team. These aren't high school kids any more.

So the only way to punish someone is to take away their greatest accomplishment. I think Bush is handling it very well and he said he wants to educate kids on what happened to him so it won't happen again. You can punish the school all day, but the kids never receive any punishment, so its not like they care to take bribes... now they might.

  • Good points, Blaize. I think the real ones who skate in this kind of stuff are the coaches. Pete Carroll knows the heat is on at USC, so he conveniently bolts to the Seahawks where he gets off Scott-free. Now, I will say this. Pete is smart to go to the NFL rather than another college job. But I also think sanctions should follow the coaches around. For instance, if UT gets 3 years of sanctions in the Lane Kiffin mess, then any school that hires Lane Kiffin or Mike Hamilton or anyone involved in it, should automatically get sanctions too if that coach or AD is hired during a period while their previous school is on probation.

  • I completely agree with you Terry!!!!! The sanctions should follow the coach and AD.

The Heisman Trophy Trust has made their decision.

I don't think taking away a heisman from Bush is going to stop others from taking money. They will not say sorry I can't take that because if I win a Heisman it could be taken away. The only way to stop it is to become more proactive about monitoring and catch it while in college. I think once they make it to the NFL and are making millions they could care less about what happens to there alma matter or their awards if they have any. I think if this meant a lot to Bush he would be trying to do everything in his power to stop this. He looks to me like he does not care.
