Should the Titans restructure Hope's salary or look elsewhere?

  • I believe he's due $6.5 million if he remains with the team in 2011.

  • Look elsewhere...I wouldn't even care if he was playing pro bono.

  • I say look elsewhere because his better days are definitely behind him.

Dawan Landry, Danieal Manning and Quintin Mikell are all potential free agents that are 30 or under.

  • I don't think you restructure. I think you have to ask him to take a plain pay cut if he's making $6.5m. The problem with adding a FA is the lockout. It won't do any good to bring a guy in if you can't sign him until a week before training camp.

TitanInsider: Any closer and you'd be in the huddle.

And if he/his agent refuse the pay cut? Cut him outright? Aren't you in the same boat as having signed a FA just before camp? Makes for a difficult situation. When does the salary become guaranteed? Can he be a late camp cut if a FA does show enough that the coaching staff feels comfortable with the FA addition?

Wow that's alot of questions you just dropped.

  • I agree with this. Ask for pay cut and just deal with it this year. Then draft my boy Mark Barron next year.

The base salary becomes guaranteed if he is on the roster in week 1, unless it somehow stipulates that if the roster bonus is paid it guarantees the base. So unless that is the case (which is not usually the case), you could bring him to camp and cut him and be free of the base salary.

Cheers, Terry. What about my contention that there's a conundrum with cutting him vs bringing in competition? What's your gut on that one?

  • Terry,
Do you know if Hope's base salary is contractually guaranteed if he's on the roster Week 1, or is the guarantee just the vested veteran's right to termination pay? This has been a distinction without a difference for most vets, but with the uncertain labor status for 2011, it seems like it could be relevant.

  • All vested veterans are entitled to their base salary if they are on the roster in the first week of the season. It is possible they could bring some competition in, but Reinfeldt is also not a real go-getter in the early stages of free agency. So you can probably forget a guy like Landry or Weddle, who would probably be signed before the Titans even made their first phone call.

  • Is there a reason we didn't draft a safety? Or do they have confidence in Schommer?

It just wasn't a good draft for Safeties. There wasn't much value for any of them. Some guys went in the second and third that would have gone in the fourth of fifth last year.

What about Whitner (assuming he qualifies under new CBA)?

Any feeling for the team's potential interest in DeAndre McDaniel? Or did they take him off their board because of the off-field concerns? Given that he went undrafted I'm thinking a team could sign him with behavior clauses.
