I wouldn't say that he was a cancer. I think it was more that he had his way of doing things and some of the disconnect was generational. Not to turn this political, but in a sense, you can think of it sort of like the 2008 presidential election when many younger people voted for Obama because they could not identify with John McCain who was many years older and had no real connection to the 20-somethings.
