Source: Won't be surprised regarding Mangini

NFL Network terms ex-Browns coach as a 'serious candidate,' but Titans likely to do their homework before making any decision.

  • So would the Titans likely convert to a 3-4 if Mangini came aboard?

They might sprinkle it in, but they don't have the personnel right now to switch completely.

  • Mangini did run a 4-3 in first year with the Jets.

Yes, and the Patriots always were a hybrid, running a lot of 3-4, but some 4-3.

This might not be a bad move. Especially since it would be hard to find another coach who might take a 1 year deal. On the other hand they may offer a 3 year deal.

  • Terry, can a team run a hybrid 3-4 by having one OLB rush the passer 90% of the time and the other OLB rush, play coverage, run defense etc....

I'm assuming it would work something like that. But if you notice, a lot of 3-4 teams run zone blitzes. They made send a LB or safety crashing through the line as a rusher and drop a DE in pass coverage. Somehow I don't see the Titans equipped to do much of that right now. Maybe a guy like Jacob Ford could do it once in a while, but I'm not sure it's ideal right now for their personnel. It will probably be a slow process to incorporate.

  • Exactly to run a 3-4 full time you need a big nose tackle to plug the middle and draw double teams and you have athletic DE's. I don't see the Titans with either of those. Plus it takes a couple years at least to fully convert to the 3-4 and get the players to fully understand how to play it. That's a couple of years of possibly and average defense at best. These schemes go in waves I think in 5 to 10 years you'll see the majority of the league back in the 4-3 or trying to switch back..
