Who's battling for the last spot at receiver?

  • I'm assuming Edison is on the list.

  • That depends on how many receivers they keep. They could keep 4 or they could keep 6, its a matter of special teams play. The four who seem to be locked in to the team are Justin Gage, Nate Washington, Kenny Britt, and Damian Williams.

Then there are the few battling for one or two spots left. The ones who actually have a chance of making the team are Lavelle Hawkins, Marc Mariani, Dominique Edison, and Paul Williams.

Most assume Paul Williams is not going to make the team, but they've kept him around and he can't go on the practice squad this year, so we'll see.

I've heard that Hawkins is playing very well in camp. I have a serving job that starts right at the same time practices start, so I haven't had a chance to make it down and see for myself. But if thats true, he's probably gonna make the team.

Marc Mariani is having a great offseason and I really like the kid. He's got a great attitude, great work ethic, and great hands. I'd like to see him make the team, but there is a good chance they could try and put him on the practice squad, but he would have to clear waivers first, which I don't think he would do.

Dominique Edison had an amazing offseason last year. This year, however, he hasn't shown much. He's going to have to step it up in this game especially if he wants a shot at this team. Otherwise he'll be on the practice squad again this year.

You've also got Bobby Sewall, a rookie from Brown University, but his chances are very slim right now. You never know though, maybe this next game is his game to shine.

  • I see the receivers ending up as follows:

    1-Gage
    2-Washington
    3-Britt
    4-D. Williams
    5-Hawkins
    6-Mariani

I think Britt and Gage will swap by the midpoint in the season.

I just dont see P. Williams making the team over Mariani. He has yet to show me anything

That's a pretty good assessment jerseyjef. Got to think P. Williams and Edison are on the outside looking in. This is the year for Britt to step up and eventually become the #1.

That's exactly how I see it, Jerseyjef. Injuries could play a role, of course, and Edison could still sneak in to the mix. The only place I might debate you on is that Hawk is ahead of Damian Williams right now, even though it might not show on game day because Williams could leapfrog him on the active list because of his return abilities.

  • So is there any growing sense that Britt really will be our #1 in actuality, as opposed to he is so physically talented that he should be...?

He will eventually. Heimerdinger is one who doesn't promote just on talent alone. Britt (and Jared Cook for that matter) have to do it consistently, play in and play out. They have to run the correct route, be in the right spot AND block downfield. Once Britt's dedication to all those things satisfies Dinger, he will start and probably supplant Gage from the lineup.
