The Tennessee Titans face a tough choice with Marc Mariani, and the receiver knows it.
Mariani's injured right shoulder is improving after he was evaluated by doctors on Monday, but time is running out on whether or not the Titans can keep the receiver/returner, who won't be ready for the season opener, but might have a chance by week three or so.
Tennessee's options are limited, as they could hold on to him and use Damian Williams and/or Khalid Wooten to handle returns in the interim or they can release him and keep Darius Reynaud, who had the job last season after Mariani's gruesome leg injury.
If the Titans release Mariani, former coach Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams are likely to pounce on him, given that Mariani was a Fisher favorite and a Pro Bowl return man as a rookie in 2010.
“I'm doing really good right now. Every day I'm trying to get better. My main thing is I've got to be healthy. It's getting down to the nitty gritty and I've just got to get healthy. I'm working my butt off and doing what I'm told. It feels better every day and I can't wait to be back out there,” Mariani said.
As for the shoulder, Mariani says it is getting better.
“They took another look yesterday. Things are going smoothly and healing up. I think the progress is really good and the reports show that,” Mariani said. “I'm still day-to-day, but I'm making huge progress, and I'm looking forward to every step. Hopefully, by the end of the week, I'll be close and back out and doing individuals next. Those are the plans. Right now, I'm just working hard and doing what they're telling me and really just trying to get back out there.”
Of course, the big question will be answered on Saturday.
Two more moves
The Titans made two expected moves to get down to 75 players by today's deadline.
As TitanInsider reported Monday, Kevin Walter was moved to in-season PUP and will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.
Safety Markelle Martin was waived/injured with a hamstring injury and will revert to injured reserve when he clears waivers.
