Titans waive Hawkins, two others

The Tennessee Titans waived wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins on Tuesday, just over a year after signing him to a three-year, $7.2 million contract.

Hawkins was a fourth-round draft pick of the Titans in 2008 and had 71 career receptions in five years, catching a career-high 47 passes in 2011. After that season, Hawkins was rewarded with an extension. He was given a $2 million signing bonus and had a $1.9 million base salary for 2013.

Releasing Hawkins, with dead money from 2014 of $666,668 now going onto the Titans' 2013 cap, saves the team a net of $1.333,332 against the cap this season.

In addition to Hawkins, the Titans also waived receiver Michael Calvin and safety Suaesi Tuimaunei, both of whom had signed futures contracts in January. Neither ever played a down for Tennessee.

The release of Hawkins comes just days after the Titans traded up to draft former University of Tennessee receiver Justin Hunter in the second round of the draft.
